My Wellness Journey began when I was about 26 years of age (and that was more than 26 years ago)! I'd been on the thin side most of my life, and my shape had changed after the birth of baby #2. I didn’t like the look. Okay, I'll be honest with you all out there. For me, it's all about pride and vanity! I just want to look and feel as good as I can for as long as I can!
I began getting up at 5:30 am to do a workout with Charlene Pickett on early TV. I progressed to 7 pm aerobics classes with a neighbor. Karen got a job and worked evenings, so I attended sessions alone or with my sister. My boys' involvement in hockey and soccer began to limit my evenings, so it was back to brisk early morning walks. Husband Kurt and I did a stint of "couples' aerobics" with friends, but lacked the stamina to continue after about two years. I kept walking on my own.
My youngest son, Jeff, married a short girl with cute curves. Birth of their child led Kerri to intensify her physical activity to regain those curves. Together, we walked 2-3 miles every morning until Kerri started to train for half marathons. Shame on me, but I wasn't ready for that! I kept walking. Kerri started teaching spinning at a fitness center and invited me to visit the yoga class as her guest. I did that, and I kept walking.
I have found yoga to be so healthy. It helps to center me, and has taught me how to set aside stress through deep breathing. Practicing yoga strengthens muscle and bone, and helps to reduce headache and digestive problems. I practice yoga as often as I am able, and I keep walking.
For me, the bottom line is to keep moving while doing something I enjoy. I prefer it to be with people I care about. That's why, most days at noon, you'll find me out walking with my Roberts friends.
