My Wellness Journey
Beverly VellaMy Wellness Journey |
My Wellness Journey started two years ago. I really didn't understand the magnitude of it until I found myself begging for someone to be on a Staywell Challenge team with me. Well…I found my team and then it began. Since I’m at a very competitive and health conscious school, West Utica, I was amazed at the importance of racking up points. Even more impressionable were the subtle threats, "We’re walking at the end of the day. You are also, right?" Or.., "Did you make your healthy recipe yet?" I’d laugh thinking, “We sure are a great bunch and having lots of fun at this.” (Hopefully, my West Utica “friends” are laughing as they read this and remember. : ) I must admit….I’m the quiet, competitive type. My first year of participating in the Staywell Challenge, I focused on getting those treasured points. I injured my leg walking my dog, so I did another type of exercise until I could do aerobics or kickboxing. My daughter and I were on vacation and constantly on the go. So.. I packed vegetables and fruits that were easy to take. She thought I was crazy. I walked everywhere and she drove my car. (It was cold outside!) This year I am still competitive. However, I am focusing more on the “healthy me.” If I don’t complete one of the daily activities, it’s okay. My exercise is important for relaxation and benefit….not just to get the point. I am listening more to my body and its needs rather than winning. I lost weight the first year and more this year. The great thing is that I’ve kept the weight off. Most importantly is that I’ve had fun and made closer friendships. (I really hope my team is thinking about bringing a healthy snack in for the staff:) |
